What to Expect With Social Media in 2018

2017 flew by, and 2018 is at our door! With a new year always comes new connections, new opportunities, and especially new trends. 

In the social media realm, for example, trends are ever-changing. Breaking through the noise online is becoming more and more challenging. The number of active social media users has surpassed 3 BILLION (that's a lot of people, folks). So what can you do to keep up with it all and stand out? The following should bring you up to date and prepare you for what is to come:

1. Embrace the new Facebook algorithm.

If you find that your business' Facebook posts aren't doing as well lately, there's a significant reason behind it. Some of the most recent social media news is that Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has made changes to the Facebook news feed. Long story short: organic reach for businesses will be no more! As a result, you'll see less public content, including news, video, and posts from brands. This content isn't completely going away, however; it will all be compiled in a new and separate "explore" feed. 

While Facebook usage is expected to decrease, Zuckerberg's reasoning is clear:  "I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more valuable. And if we do the right thing, I believe that will be good for our community and our business over the long term too."

So overall, this is great news for consumers! For businesses, however - marketing has become a bit more of a challenge. You could get around this by using paid ads, but here's another trick to get around this:

  •  Leverage Facebook Groups.

Facebook is all about connection, so leverage it! Join groups that align well with your audience and connect with the people within them. If you have valuable and informative content, be sure to share it amongst several groups and you'll not only create real connections, you'll be more likely to gain their attention. 

2. Harness the Power of Live Video.

2018 is the time to fully unleash the power of live video! You’re going to see a lot more of it this year, and those who do it well will accelerate their reach. Why? A study by livestream has shown that 82% of consumers would rather watch a video than read a written update. Also, the processors within phones have become so advanced, that streaming has become basically effortless. 

3. Use Instagram Stories More.

Did you know? Instagram Stories has only been out for a year and it's already more popular than Snapchat! (50 million more people use Instagram Stories, to be exact). Due to its relevancy and prevalence, you most definitely should be leveraging this tool to boost your biz.

4. Focus on Generation Z. 

The reason? Gen Z is jusssst beginning to enter the labor force, and will have increased buying power for some time. Because of this, Gen Z is two- to three times more likely to be influenced by social media than by sales or discounts! Take those factors into consideration and you'll see why marketing to that demographic is so crucial. (Hint: Gen Z LOVES Snapchat and Instagram). 


Keep all of the above factors in mind when crafting your social media strategy. Focus on who has the buying power and who is the most likely to give you their attention.
